Mark banged into me in the dark, then hissed with pain as he pulled back from the bruising hilt of my weapon. âYou should have left the sword,â he whispered.
âShh. I told you Iâm not going anywhere without it. Someoneâs down at the end of the hall. Get back.â
We pulled back around the corner. âHow can you see anything? Itâs pitch black down there.â
âMom fed me lots of carrots.â I didnât bother looking back at him, but I knew he was rolling his eyes. âOkay, itâs clear now. Hurry!â
We entered the dark hall and found the door to Cameronâs office. Sweat broke out on my temples. There was no way I could step back into that room. âIâll stand guard.â
Mark didnât argue. He pulled a gadget from his belt and disabled the magnetic lock on the door. Leave it to Mark to find a source for tech-toys after only a few days on this side of the portal. What was the equivalent of a hardware store in Lyric, anyway? Probably just as full of inexplicable bits and pieces as in our world. He slipped into Cameronâs office and a glow appeared from under the door. He must have palmed the lever for the roomâs lightwalls.
I winced at the obvious sign of our presence and drew my sword in case anyone else was prowling the corridors. Time dragged, and I jumped when Mark opened the door behind me. He had shut down the lightwalls, and he locked the door behind him.
âNothing,â he whispered. âI searched everywhere.â
I thought of the back stairs that Case had used. âLetâs try downstairs.â It took me a moment to get my bearings and find the unmarked door that led down to the cell where I had been kept.
âI never knew this was down here,â Mark said, leading the way down the stairs. His footsteps sounded heavy on the metal treads.
âMark, keep it quiet.â I stayed on the balls of my feet, somewhat smugly demonstrating my ability to move silently, but my sword banged against a railing. The clash echoed against the concrete and steel walls of the basement. To his credit, Mark didnât comment. We paused, and I stretched my hearing to scan for anyone nearby. âOkay. Letâs go.â I started feeling my way forward and banged my head against something protruding from the wall. âOw! Why didnât we bring a light?â
âHold on.â A soft light began to glow in Markâs hand.
I squinted at the object in his palm. It had a surface similar to a small heat trivet, but this was in the shape of a cube. âHey, I havenât seen anything like that here before.â
âYou spent all your time in Braide Wood. They arenât exactly the high-tech capital of the world. Now, if youâd been at Rendor . . .â
âWhereâs that?â
âNear the River Borders. Itâs my clan. Um, Susan, could we discuss it later?â
It annoyed me when Mark was practical. But he was right. It was dangerous to linger down here. I scowled
